Dear Tiger Community,

Welcome back to another exciting year, I am thrilled to begin my 5th year as Assistant Principal at McCormick Middle School. My educational background includes a Bachelor of Arts and Science in Sociology, and Master of Educational Leadership. With over 24 years of experience in education, I firmly believe that building relationships with both students and parents can pave the way for a successful education. By working together, we can make sure every child’s academic, social, and emotional needs are met.

As we start the 2026-2027 school year, I would like to encourage all parents to have a growth mindset and remember that we are all in this together. Watching your children grow from young impressionable 6th graders to strong well-rounded young adults in 8th grade is not only exciting but rewarding.  I am here to support attendance, academics, and social emotional learning; to bridge our students from not only leaders on campus to engaged learners in our community.

I am a proud member of the Hays CISD community where I reside with my husband and two boys. We live and breathe soccer in our home and feel that participating in activities inside and outside of school help foster a well rounded sense of self.  Es una alegría y un honor servir como uno de sus administradores dedicados aquí en McCormick.

I look forward to meeting you all during the upcoming school year. If you have any questions, please feel free to stop in, call, or email me as the year progresses.

Sincerely,

Helen Garcia-Bernal, 7th grade Assistant Principal

Hello Tigers!!

I am excited to serve as an Assistant Principal at McCormick Middle School. This marks my 23rd year in education and my 10th year in Hays CISD. I earned a Bachelor of Science in Family and Consumer Sciences with an emphasis in Child Development, as well as a Master's degree in Special Education, from Southwest Texas State University.

Throughout my career, I have had the opportunity to serve students in a variety of roles. I have taught Special Education across multiple grade levels, coached middle school basketball, volleyball, track, and soccer, and served as an Assistant Principal at both the elementary and secondary levels. Most recently, I was a Middle School Assistant Principal in Community ISD, and I am excited to return to Hays CISD.

I am honored to join a team of educators who are deeply committed to student success and dedicated to helping every child reach their full potential. I look forward to becoming part of the Tiger community, building meaningful relationships with students, staff, and families, and contributing to a positive school culture where everyone can thrive.
