Winter Weather Update
Dear Hays CISD Family,
We have some updates for you.
School Canceled Remainder of the Week
Thank you to everyone doing the best they could (teachers and students) to continue virtual learning this week. We now have confirmation, with today’s expanded waiver from TEA, that we can waive enough required instructional minutes to cancel school the remainder of the week. So, all school, including virtual learning, is cancelled until Monday, February 22, 2021. Our weather makeup day on Monday (from the earlier snow event) should count, which puts us back on schedule for the year without the need to make up any additional weather minutes at this time (including our cancellation this week). Regardless of waivers, our plan all along was, and continues to be, that we offer grace and understanding to everyone.
All students and staff should remain home and safe, with the limited exception of staff members who may be contacted by supervisors in the event they are needed for emergency operations.
All extracurricular and afterschool activities are cancelled through Friday, February 19. Weather and safety permitting, planned activities on Saturday should be able to resume, but check with coaches and sponsors to confirm that events scheduled for the weekend have not been canceled.
Facility Conditions
The school buildings are holding up well. Five of our 25 campuses have experienced some pipe damage in limited areas, but Hays CISD maintenance crews and outside contractors are onsite making repairs. If a campus is anticipated to be affected on Monday, we will send information to the parents of that campus later in the week, or during the weekend.
Thank You!
Thank you to everyone who is helping to ease the burden of this winter storm crisis – neighbors helping neighbors, people in the community serving as first responders, grocery store workers, hospital staff, utility company crews, convenience store clerks, news reporters, and many others. We are especially proud of our transportation team for volunteering to come in and offer school buses as community warming stations. And, we are indebted to our maintenance department for working around the clock, responding to campus facility emergencies.
Also, I’d be remiss if I didn’t thank the district’s communication and technology teams who have all helped to keep our social media, website, and other communication tools updated with information. On a personal note, I’m still without power at home - 57 hours and counting, and have had very limited and intermittent cellular data or call service. If we can get a signal, we’ll keep you posted. Hopefully, you will be able to get a signal long enough to see the information.
We’re all in this together. Stay safe and warm as best you can and we’ll see you back on Monday.
Sincerely,
Tim Savoy
Hays CISD Chief Communication Officer
