Dr. Medina Named New District HR Chief
Hays Consolidated Independent School District (Hays CISD) Superintendent Dr. Eric Wright is pleased to announce the selection of Dr. Fernando Medina as the district’s new chief human resources officer. On Monday, the Hays CISD Board of Trustees unanimously approved hiring Dr. Medina. He will replace Marivel Sedillo, who was promoted in May to the district’s deputy superintendent and chief academic officer roles.
“It’s my honor to welcome Dr. Medina to our school district family,” said Superintendent Wright. “He is a highly accomplished and passionate bilingual educator with nearly three decades of experience in the classroom, as a campus leader, and as a human resources professional. Our district is lucky to have him on the team. As with most organizations, great things don’t happen without the passion and dedication of the people who serve. The heartbeat of our district – the people who make the magic happen – includes our teachers, bus drivers, child nutrition employees, custodians, campus leaders, administration, and the many other professionals who work for Hays CISD – more than 3,500 in all. Dr. Medina is here to take care of our team members, so that they can focus on providing our students with the finest educational experiences in Texas.”
Dr. Medina began his career in education in the early 1990s as a music teacher and band director, including time spent as the director of the North Grand Prairie High School Mariachi band. From 1997 to 2016, he honed his craft as an education leader, serving as a campus principal, the executive director of human resources, and eventually the assistant superintendent of human resources for the Richardson Independent School District near Dallas. In 2016, Dr. Medina became the Austin Independent School District’s chief human capital officer.
Among his many talents, Dr. Medina considers himself a reflective, diligent, data-driven, and innovative problem solver. He is self-motivated with excellent analytical and organizational skills.
“What stood out to me about Dr. Medina on his resume and in his interview was that he can genuinely inspire and lead others, that he seeks to understand varied perspectives, and that he is able to quickly develop trust with people. He knows the value of building strong interpersonal relationships with staff, parents, students, and community members,” said Dr. Wright.
“I am highly passionate about education and I believe that the educator is the greatest equalizer who can ensure equity in and out of the classroom so that all children reach their potential,” said Dr. Medina. “Ensuring that all children have access to quality educators, therefore, is paramount to me. I strongly believe that all systems, and the people who lead and create them, must work together strategically and with a focus on equity to ensure the success of each student and teacher. I am looking forward to contributing to the leadership team at Hays and creating an environment where every child can learn, grow, and succeed.”
Dr. Medina holds a Bachelor of Music Education from the University of North Texas; a Master of Education, with a perfect 4.0 grade-point-average (GPA), from the University of Texas at Arlington; and his Doctorate of Education, also with a perfect 4.0 GPA, from the University of North Texas. He has earned numerous awards through the years as an educator and for his students and campuses from the Texas Education Agency. As the campus principal, he led Dover Elementary School in Richardson ISD in earning a National Blue Ribbon School of Excellence designation from the United States Department of Education.
Dr. Medina’s first official workday in Hays CISD will be July 1, 2021.
