Winter Weather Update Friday, February 19, 2021
Dear Hays CISD Family,
Here’s a quick note to keep you posted on what’s happening in the district.
We have crews working to repair damage across the district and we do want to be able to open on Monday for students who are participating in in-person learning. However, more than half of our campuses have damage associated with frozen pipes – some limited, and some a bit worse. As the thaw continues, we are discovering new damage and broken pipes at campuses previously thought to be unaffected.
We have not yet made a decision regarding school on Monday. We will continue to assess through tomorrow and will make the decision on Saturday by late afternoon or early evening. We will let you know once we have decided. In the meantime, please prepare for the possibility that we may need to be on a 100% remote learning schedule for the first part of the week, either districtwide or at certain campuses.
The factors that will affect the decision include: the level of water damage at schools that cannot be cleaned up or repaired by Monday, the likelihood that some campuses may not have enough safe drinking water, and the possibility that some campuses may not have water at all.
Thanks for everything you are doing to help your neighbors and friends. Stay safe!
Tim
P.S. I appreciate everyone who reached out to me regarding my power. It came back on Wednesday evening, right after my water cut off. Still waiting for that to come back. I continue to be grateful for everyone working overtime to restore our utilities and keep us connected to gas and food supply lines.
