High School #3 Site Selection

    Following a substantial community engagement process, on March 28, 2016, the Board of Trustees voted unanimously to approve the northwest location on RR 967 as the site for the district's third high school (contingent upon voters approving a bond measure to fund its construction).

    The site selection committee initially narrowed the choice from the four pieces of district-owned property to two - one northwest location and one northeast location in Travis County. Then, comparing the two sites, the committee made a recommendation decision based on a criteria score sheet created by the committee. The recommendation decision followed serveral months worth of committee meetings and three public forums.

  • March 28, 2016 Final Update: The Board of Trustees voted unanimously to approve the northwest location on RR 967 as the site for the district's third high school, should voters approve a bond measure to fund its construction.

    March 21, 2016 Update: The Board of Trustees will hear the presentation regarding the committee recommendation at the workshop meeting. 

    March 10 Update: On Thursday, March 10, 2016, the committee voted to recommend building the high school (should it be approved by voters) at the northwest location on RR 967. The Board of Trustees will hear a presentation on the committee’s recommendation at its workshop meeting on March 21, 2016. The Board may vote at its business meeting on March 28, 2016 to approve a location.

    District administration had some questions regarding a possible bus transportation center located on the proposed high school #3 northwest site and issued a statement on the matter:

    March 2 Update: The committee was pleased with the turnout and comments from the 30+ speakers at the public forum on Saturday, February 27th. The committee met March 1st to continue discussion of the selection process. They are working through an exercise to compare the two remaining sites against each other. The previous, initial criteria rankings by the committee (as posted on this page) compared all four of the possible sites against each other. The committee is scheduled to meet again on Thursday, March 10, 2016, at the Kimbro Building at 6:00 p.m. The meeting is not a closed meeting, but there is not a public comment portion during this meeting. If they reach a decision regarding the recommendation, the action item could still make the school board agenda for the March meetings. If no decision is reached at this meeting, it will be April before an item could go before the Board for a vote.  

    February 9, 2016 Update: The High School Site Selection Committee met Tuesday evening to discuss and consider the ongoing feedback received from the public and to further define the selection process. The committee decided not to narrow its preliminary recommendation to one choice at this time to allow for continued discussion about the merits and disadvantages of each of the two finalist sites. However, the committee members agreed that to uphold transparency with the process they would announce the group was leaning favorably to recommending the northeast location to the Board of Trustees as the site for high school #3. The committee will host a third public forum on Saturday, February 27, 2016, at 10:00 a.m. in the cafeteria at Tom Green Elementary School (1301 Old Goforth Road, Buda, Texas 78610). The committee will meet on Tuesday, March 1, 2016, to potentially make a decision regarding its final site location recommendation.

    The committee reviewed data and discussed: future growth, existing student populations, potential traffic impact at both locations, transportation costs to the district at both locations, fire and emergency services availability and response time, and public feedback and sentiment. The committee also contemplated what potential attendance zones might look like. However, with the district’s continued fast growth, attendance zones will not be decided until 2018. The committee acknowledged this would not be a deciding factor.     

    February 4, 2016 Update: The committee met following the public forum on February 2, 2016, to continue the discussion of the feedback from the community and consider additional information and questions raised. The committee decided the discussion needs additional time. They adjusted the timeline to include an additional meeting and likely a third public forum (date to be determined). The target date to make a recommendation to the Board of Trustees was changed to March (rather than February). 

    January 27, 2016 Update: The committee has narrowed its focus to two locations - the northwest site (next to Carpenter Hill Elementary) and the northeast site (on Turnersville Road). It has eliminated the east and southeast potential locations, as well as the option to purchase new land for a third high school.
