High School Newcomer Program

  • Students in grades 9 –12 who are non English speakers and have been in the country for less than 1 year enroll in a New Arrival Center which is housed at Lehman High School.  Teachers in the New Arrival Center are trained to work with recent arrivals and provide instruction during the morning hours for the first year. Students are provided with extended ESL instructional time during the morning in order to accelerate English language development and literacy skills in a supportive and meaningful environment while providing required credits for high school graduation. Students attend elective classes in the afternoons. During their second year in U.S. schools, students transition into content area classes with teachers who are trained in the SIOP model.
