Proposed Limited Attendance Zone Changes for 2026 - 2027
General Information
In January 2026, the Hays CISD Board of Trustees will consider the proposed adjustments to the Hays CISD elementary school and middle school attendance zone maps outlined on this webpage to alleviate actual and projected overcrowding at Sunfield and Buda Elementary Schools and McCormick Middle School; and to aid with better capacity utilization at Carpenter Hill and Elm Grove Elementary Schools and Dahlstrom Middle School. No high school zones are affected in this proposal.
The impact on current students is relatively limited because most of the territory proposed for change is not yet developed. However, some areas could affect a limited number of current students. For any current students affected, this zone change recommendation includes (beginning with the 2026 – 2027 school year) allowing the students to either choose to go to their new campuses or remain at their current schools until the final grade levels at the campuses. However, for students who decide to remain at their current schools, the district would not be able to provide bus transportation to the current campuses because the buses in the affected neighborhoods would be transporting students to the newly zoned schools.

To create attendance zones, the district demographers use areas called planning units (PUs). This is map of the current planning units and their assigned numbers in Hays CISD. The chart below highlights the current and future projected impacts by the affected planning units.
