Election Signs on Hays CISD School District Property

  • Hays CISD school-related elections are generally held annually in May. However, school facilities are used in various city, county, state, and national elections held on dates other than the May uniform election date. The following applies to all election signs for any election:

Candidates for elected office may place signs at school district facilities, but only at the facilities being used as polling places and only during the times they are serving as polling locations. The signs must be free-standing and erected without the aid of, or attached to, school district-owned fences, buildings, or landscaping. Electioneering using school resources is illegal in Texas, and Board policy prohibits campaigning on school property, except during the times the school district facilities are being used as polling locations. (District policy GKD-Local and BBBD-Legal, Texas Education Code, Texas Election Code.) (https://www.ethics.state.tx.us/resources/advertising/Bsch_adv.php)

District policy GKDA (Local) waives the requirement for the district to have prior review of election signs before posting them at school locations that are serving as polling locations. This means candidates do not need permission from the district to post election signs.

Note that placing signs at polling locations must be in compliance with the distance marker rules and they are subject to the jurisdiction of the election judge at the polling location. Please also remember to post signs that comply with the Election Code and Transportation Code requirements. The Texas Ethics Commission has resources on their website to help you with political advertising and conduct at polling locations.
