One of the enduring strengths of Hays CISD has always been a commitment to community, where the word “neighbor” still means something. One of the best ways to be a neighbor is to ensure that each one of our students has every opportunity to succeed, no matter their background or circumstance.

The Hays CISD Clothes Closet opened its doors in 2018 to help students in all grades and at all campuses whose families or guardians are experiencing economic challenges. When we opened the Hays CISD Clothes Closet, it was always our vision to open a food program along with it.

Our next challenge to conquer is food insecurity. We are piloting HaysHope2Go - a project to alleviate hunger among our students who are most in need. Food insecurity is a major barrier to having students focus on their work in class on their way to reaching their full academic potential. With our community’s support and generosity, the Hays CISD Clothes Closet, our volunteers, and our amazing community partners are ready to take on poverty and hunger for the benefit of the children in our district.

Our HaysHope2Go pilot program will address food insecurity for students from Uhland Elementary School, where 96.46% of the student population receive free breakfast and lunch at school. We are hoping to fill in the gaps for weekends and holidays. We plan to start the week of Thanksgiving break, November 25th-29th, and for the weeks the students are off for winter break, December 23rd - January 7th. We are targeting a minimum of 250 students, but the more sponsorships we are able to attract, the more children we can feed. Enrollment at Uhland Elementary is currently at 740. This program is envisioned to turn into a weekend food supplement endeavor during the spring semester.
