    Who is eligible to apply and participate?

    • Credit Recovery:
      The summer school program Credit Recovery (Credit Recovery) is only open to current middle students in Hays CISD who have not passed two or three core classes (English, Math, Science or Social Studies).   Students whose non-custodial parent or guardian resides within Hays CISD attendance boundaries may also qualify for Summer Programs depending on family visitation agreements as ordered by a court of law.
    • STAAR Camp:
      The summer school program Student Success Initiative (SSI) is offered to any 8th grade student who did not pass the 2nd administration of the STAAR for 8-Reading STAAR and/or 8-Math STAAR.
    • ELL Summer Program:
      The Summer School program for English Language Learners is invitation only by the Director of Bilingual, ESL and Migrant Programs.  Participants will be notified directly and will have the opportunity to participate in an extremely rigorous learning atmosphere designed to accelerate their acquisition of English.

    How much does the summer school program cost for participants?

    • Credit Recovery:
      Credit Recovery is fee-based. Each course is $50 payable to Hays CISD.  Transportation and meals are provided, as well as a student supplies.  If your student qualifies for Free and Reduced lunch, please contact your campus counselor for more information on registration costs.

    • STAAR Camp and ELL Summer Program:
      There is no cost for the SSI or ESL Summer Programs.


    How much of a time commitment will the summer program require?

    The summer school program is designed to be rigorous and intensive. Participants will be expected to take part in all classes & activities from June 11, 2018 through June 29, 2018.

    Who should I ask about the summer school programs?

    You should talk with your campus school counselor. There will be a public parent meeting at Simon Middle School cafeteria.

    • STAAR Camp: Thursday, June 6, 2018 at 6:30PM (SMS Cafe)
    • Credit Recovery: Thursday, June 6, 2018 at 6:30PM (SMS Cafe)

    What if I don’t want to go to summer school, but failed 2 core courses or STAAR?

    • Credit Recovery:
      Credit Recovery is required for any student that failed 2 or 3 core courses during the academic school year. If a student failed 3 or more core courses, a campus-level committee will meet with the parents/guardians and determine promotion or retention of your student.
    • STAAR Camp:
      SSI is offered for all students who did not pass the 2nd administration of STAAR for 8-Reading STAAR and/or 8-Math STAAR.
    • ELL Summer Program:
      ESL Summer Program is offered to any Hays CISD ESL student grades 6-7 by invitation-only.

    When do I apply and when are forms due?

    • For STAAR Camp and Credit Recovery, the school counselor will call each student in to alert them of the possibility of summer school. The counselor will give students the application. The application is due by Tuesday, May 29, 2018 at 3:40PM (CST).
    • ELL Program: There is no application for our English Language Program. Students are recommended through the Bilingual Department.

    When will I know whether I have to attend a summer school program or not?

    Applicants will be notified no later than Friday, June 1, 2018 at 4 PM (CST) by their campus counselor.

    Is food provided during the summer?

    Yes, food is provided for ALL summer programs. We will have both breakfast and lunch available each day.

    Will I have free time during the summer program?

    Students can expect minimal down time.  It is up to them if they would like to use that time to get ahead in assignments or to engage in social activities.

    What is the dress code?

    The dress code for the program will follow the Hays CISD student dress code which can be found in the district handbook.  During certain occasions, we will ask students to be in professional dress or wear business casual clothing. We will notify students, in advance, of these occasions.

    Will I have assignments outside of class?

    Students may be assignment homework, and it is up to them as to when they will do it. Students will have to plan their free time accordingly.

    Will I have the same access to Hays CISD library and media resources if I am a summer school student?

    Once you are in the summer school program, you will use your Hays CISD Student ID. This will give you access to all of the amenities that summer school students have; this includes access to the Library-Media Center, iStation, lunch account and WiFi.
