National Board Certification, developed by the National Board for Professional Teaching Standards, is the most respected professional certification available in education and provides numerous benefits to teachers, students and schools. It was designed to develop, retain and recognize accomplished teachers and to generate ongoing improvement in schools nationwide. Recognized as the gold standard in teacher certification, the National Board believes higher standards for teachers means better learning for students.
The program components are:
- Component 1: Content Knowledge (online assessment)
- Component 2: Differentiation in Instruction (portfolio based assessment)
- Component 3: Teaching Practice and Learning Environment (portfolio based assessment)
- Component 4: Effective and Reflective Practitioner (portfolio based assessment)

Hays CISD National Board Certified Teacher Program
Hays CISD has developed a National Board Certified Teacher program to assist and support teachers pursuing their national board certification. Hays CISD has partnered with Texas National Board Coalition for Teaching to provide support and guidance as teachers work towards certification.
Hays CISD NBCT Cohort Program Candidates receive:
- Virtual, monthly meetings with a TxNBCT Facilitator
- A NBCT Mentor that provides small group mentorship
- Submission support for all four components
- 36 hours of cohort support with NBCT peers
Former Hays CISD Board Member Dr. Esmeralda Perez-Gonzalez, a National Board Certified Teacher and TxNBCT Facilitator, leads our teachers in meaningful discussion and reflection around best practices in teaching in monthly virtual sessions. She fulfills the TxNBCT Mission by fully engaging and supporting high-quality teaching and learning through professional growth and leadership.
National Board Certified Teachers Compensation:
- NBCTs receive additional compensation as part of TIA
- NBCTs receive a Hays CISD stipend annually
- National Board Certification Fees Reimbursement (up to $1,900)
Who is Eligible for the Hays CISD NBCT Cohort?
To be eligible for the Hays CISD NBCT cohort, teachers must hold a bachelor’s degree, a valid state certification and have one year of classroom experience.
How Do I Apply?
We are now accepting applications to create our National Board Teacher Cohort 3. Application window is March 29 - April 19, 2024. (Links to information and application are below.)
