#34 Cultural competence--Young person has knowledge of and comfort with people of different cultural/racial/ethnic backgrounds.

Second graders at Hemphill Elementary School put on a spectacular program for Black History Month. Students took the audience through a timeline of the history of African Americans and included personal history of individual African Americans as well as songs that were pertinent to the time period. A special thank-you to the 2nd grade team of Nicole Lockhart, Sonia Maldanado, Kristina May, Maribel Ramirez, Michelle Reid, Leticia Schneider and Tony Lopez.

#21 Achievement motivation--Young person is motivated to do well in school.

Students in Brooke Wood's class at Chapa Middle School have been chosen as finalists in the Kids Creating Community Content Contest sponsored by Center for Interactive Learning and Collaboration and Tandberg.  They won 4th place for their interactive math lesson, which they presented to another class via videoconferencing. Their lesson was titled "Monkeying Around With Averages" and integrated real world math problems based on the Austin Wildlife and Rescue Center.

#17 Creative activities--Young person spends three or more hours per week in lessons or practice in music, theater, or other arts.

The Wallace Middle School Varsity Choir performed at the Texas Music Educators Association (TMEA) Conference in Austin in late February.  Students learned additional music to the pieces they are preparing for the UIL Concert and Sight-reading contest in April.

Kelly Sanders and Brandon Snyder, choir and theatre art teachers at Wallace Middle School, have combined efforts to perform the musical production of Bugsy Malone, Jr.  The auditions were open to the entire school.  Students have committed to practice after school for six weeks for their performances on April 3 and 4.

Clint Crabill, senior at Hays High School, co-directed a movie entitled Believe it. Live it, which profiles individuals who portray the 12 points of Boy Scouts of America law. The film, which features a wounded Iraq war medic, a wheelchair athlete, a Rwandan genocide survivor, firefighters and Army medical helicopter crew members, will be distributed nationally to Boy Scouts of America.

#9 Service to others--Young person serves in the community one hour or more per week.

Fuentes Elementary students conducted their 4th annual School Walk for Diabetes recently, raising $3,575 dollars for the American Diabetes Association.  The students walked a total of 1,591 laps on the quarter mile track, which equals 397 miles. Because this exceeded the school goal, principal Jodie Wymore had to kiss Steve the pig.

#25 Reading for pleasure--Young person reads for pleasure three or more hours per week.

In celebration of  Read Across America Day, students at Negley Elementary School left morning assembly on Monday and gathered to read for a brief period.

#5 Caring school climate--School provides a caring, encouraging environment.

Each teacher and staff member at Tom Green Elementary adopted a Hornet student for the year.  Hornet Heros meet with their student at least once a week. Staff members can be seen having lunch with their student, playing games or reading in the library.  A few brave staff members even shoot hoops on the basketball court.

#26 Caring--Young person places high value on helping other people.

Wallace Middle School student Angel Lippe makes hand woven friendship bracelets which she sells during school events.  All proceeds go to support PAWS in Kyle.

#6 Parent involvement in schooling--Parent(s) are actively involved in helping young person succeed in school.

Officers of the Tobias Elementary School PTA gathered with PTA leaders from across the state for the Annual Texas PTA State Convention in The Woodlands in late February.

Tracie Samuel, Vanessa Petrea, Felicia Svendsen and Jeanette Ramirez participated in workshops that provided valuable information and instruction on topics that include: ADHA, dyslexia, promoting healthy lifestyles, discipline strategies, making homework “painless”, diversity and multiculturalism, and environmental awareness.

During the convention, the Tobias members voted in favor of new legislative positions supported by the Texas PTA, including expanding the sales tax holiday to cover school supplies and placing further restrictions on the use of wireless communications devices by youth under the age of 18 while driving

#17 Creative activities--Young person spends three or more hours per week in lessons or practice in music, theater, or other arts. 

Five Lehman High School students earned Area gold medals at the recent Regional and Area Visual Arts Scholastic Event (VASE) meet in Austin. These students--Jared Rodriguez (Drawing/Mixed Media), Betsy Kellner (Photography), Charrealle Robinson (Painting), Nicholas Goldberg (Drawing), and Jacqueline Rose (Photography) qualify for the state meet in April. In all, LHS students walked away with 51 Regional gold medals.

Five Hays High School students earned Area gold medals in the VASE meet. Ben Patty (Photography), Gabriela Buentello (Pencil Drawing), Cheyenne Crooks, (Charcoal Drawing), Hillary Gee (Pencil Drawing), and Shelby Whitehead (Oil Pastel) qualify for the state meet in April. In all, HHS students walked away with 25 Regional gold medals.

#21 Achievement motivation--Young person is motivated to do well in school.

Maddy Hewitt, an 8th grader at Wallace Middle School, has been accepted to a Gifted-and-Talented summer program at Duke University in North Carolina. Through the Duke TIP (Talent Identification Program), Maddy took the Scholastic Aptitude Test in 7th grade and qualified for a scholarship to the summer program.

Lehman High School criminal justice students fared well in competition in Waco recently. The Crime Scene Investigation team of Brittany Gonzales, Kim Pastrano, and Brandi Gilmore won a bronze medal; the Building Search team of Manny Calderon, Gabriel Lawrence, and Lauren Garcia won a silver medal and the Felony Stop group of Matt Calderon, and Shay Petitt won 5th Place.

Chapa Middle School yearbook and journalism staff has been honored with an Honorable Mention in the 2008 Taylor Publishing Yearbook Yearbook. Advisors and journalists across the nation peruse the pages for theme concepts, page designs as well as cover and photo ideas. Each year, Taylor recognizes fewer than 10 percent of yearbook programs. Yearbooks are selected by an independent panel of judges that look at design, photography, writing and covers.

Hays High School students Avery Shelton, Roni Hidalgo, Leah Cromwell and Julie Morris captured 1st Place at the UIL Accounting contest at Westwood recently.

#9 Service to Others--Young person serves in the community one hour or more per week. 

Elm Grove Elementary School students raised $2,212 in sponsorships through the Jump Rope/Hoops for Heart program. Funds raised will go to the American Heart Association to be used for research and education on heart disease and strokes.

#18 Youth programs--Young person spends one or more hours per week in sports, clubs, or organizations at school and/or in the community. 

The Hays High School Lady Rebel Softball team is offering advertising space along the fence in the outfield. This is a fundraising project for the team. Cost is $300 for a 4'x4' sign.   For additional information, please contact Sarah Schmerber, via email:  schmerbers@hayscisd.net
